In this work, the figure represents the historical abuse the female body has endured, personified as Yin—the primordial dark force from which all phenomena are born. The yellow tear streaks on her cheek are an ode to the "Black Madonna," representing the feminine principle exiled from Christianity. I was fortunate enough to see the Black Madonna at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris this past winter.
