Maya Frodeman Gallery is pleased to present Everything is Liquid, a body of work by Mike and Doug Starn as well as a selection of multi-media photographic studies by artist Richard Fleischner for the IFPDA’s 31^st Print Fair. Our booth showcases a selection of prints that challenge the typical understanding of the medium. 

ABOUT EVERYTHING IS LIQUID

Everything is Liquid explores how all things are flowing, moving, and finding new form. Nothing stays the same; all things are in an endless process of becoming something else. The Starns probe this idea through comparing rising and falling seascapes with mountain-scapes that change gradually over geologic time. The works are made of Ultrachrome K3 Epson ink jet prints on gelatin hand-coated Zerkall paper, acrylic paint, Scotch tape, nails, and wood. When the viewer is first confronted with the image it defies the viewer’s comprehension. What are these works? Are they photographs? Are they paintings? Are they woodblock prints? Inspired by painter Albert Bierstadt’s (1830-1902) use of stereography to paint accurate three-dimensional perspective in his mountain scenes in striking detail, Doug and Mike Starn invert Bierstadt’s process by taking the visual clarity of high-definition digital photographs and zooming into the images until they begin to fall apart. They destroy the photographic detail and three-dimensional illusion while retaining elements of the scene, all the while stripping out tonality and finding something that looks like a woodcut or engraving mask but is neither. The result are works that are neither simply print or painting, nor photography or sculpture, but rather three-dimensional objects of inquiry by their very nature.

 

ABOUT RICHARD FLEISCHNER 

Perhaps best known for his large-scale, site-specific projects, oftentimes underscored by the conceptual landscape of urban planning, land art, and architecture, Richard Fleischner is among the leading artists of his generation. Richard Fleischner is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Guggenheim Foundation (2018), the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2016), the Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts (2000), and three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships (1975, 1980, and 1991). Selected solo exhibitions include “Richard Fleischner” (2013-14); South London Gallery, London; “Material/Process/Place” (2011), Knoedler & Company, New York; “Richard Fleischner: Critical Distance” (1992) Des Moines Art Center. Guggenheim Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery, amongst many others.
